CBT for Tinnitus-Support Group Guest Speaker

On 8th April we were delighted to welcome Emma Boyden, Lead Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner for Telford & Wrekin IAPT to our support group.

Emma came along to deliver a talk on CBT for tinnitus. The talk included an overview of CBT techniques, including re-focussing and relaxation. Emma then went into more detail on how CBT can support with areas of living which are commonly affected by tinnitus, such as sleep.

It was interesting to hear how good ‘sleep hygiene’ (a practice which includes things like consistent sleep and waking times) and simple tools like keeping a notebook for worries and thoughts by the side of the bed, can support the improvement of sleep.

At the end of the talk, the group had lots of questions. We discussed sleep, sound therapies and how anyone who would like support can self-refer through their local NHS IAPT or wellbeing services.

Following the session, Emma got in touch to say “I had a great experience talking to the group, and although CBT can’t cure tinnitus, I really enjoyed speaking and answering questions on how different techniques and tools can help people to manage their mood and regain some control.”

Support Group Facilitator, Lucy, commented “It’s such a pleasure being able to invite professional such as Emma to the group. There are a range of different things which can support a person’s experience of tinnitus, and having speakers talk about their expertise generates new ideas that the group can take away and explore.”
