It is UK Deaf Awareness Week (14-20 May 2018) and Signal is celebrating with a number of activities in Shropshire. These are all intended to raise awareness about deafness and hearing loss and to support people who think that they might have a hearing loss to seek help sooner rather than later.
Monday to Friday, you are welcome to take up a free hearing screening at Signal: The Hub in the Riverside shopping centre in central Shrewsbury. This is a quick and painless initial test that indicates whether a hearing loss might be present. The Hub Manager Paul is on hand to provide information about any next steps.
At Signal: The Hub you also have the opportunity to try out a range of helpful technology, such as, amplified telephones, alerting devices and wireless personal listening devices. These are all designed to help people with hearing loss and hearing aid users to communicate more easily.
Bigger and better in its 11th year, this free exhibition is open to everyone to learn more about the support on offer to help to improve the quality of life for people with sensory impairments – hearing loss and sight loss. It is an occasion for peer support, networking and gaining knowledge.
Visit our stand at this fantastic exhibition to find out more about Signal’s practical and emotional support both for people living with deafness, hearing loss or tinnitus and for their family and community members.
On Thursday (17 May), Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service is at Signal: The Hub in Shrewsbury, promoting fire safety for all. This is the perfect chance to try out a smoke alarm with a vibrating, under-pillow pad, or to learn how deaf people can contact the emergency services by SMS.
Also on Thursday, you can find friendly faces from Signal at the “Wellbeing through community referrals” event at Court Street Medical Practice in Madeley in Telford. Come along and discover how we can support you to live well with hearing loss and associated conditions like tinnitus.
On Sunday (20 May), Signal is happy to be taking part in Telford Pride @50 at the Teddy Bears’ picnic in Telford Town Park. There will be lots of information available at our stand and plenty of fun for all ages, including learning how to finger spell your name in British Sign Language.
Signal’s springtime activities don’t stop with Deaf Awareness Week, and on Saturday 26 May you can find us at the Shropshire County Agricultural Show at the Greenhous West Midlands Showground in Shrewsbury (see headline photograph).
Here, we are encouraging people, particularly from this county’s rural communities, to talk openly about hearing loss and the isolation that it can bring and take positive action to address concerns. There is something for all the family, and you can learn how to sign the names of farm animals and machinery.
We really look forward to seeing you at one of our deaf friendly activities this springtime!
